BCCI officially postpones 2020 Indian Premier League indefinitely

With the growing coronavirus cases across India, BCCI has officially postponed 2020 Indian Premier League. The thirteen edition of the league was originally supposed to begin in March but it got suspended due to Coronavirus Pandemic.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that lockdown will be enforced till 3rd May. BCCI had no choice but to cancel the cash-rich league due to the increasing number of cases in different parts of the country.

In a formal press release, BCCI stated that the health and safety of citizens of the country and everyone involved in the Indian Premier League remains our utmost priority. The decision was taken after agreement with various stakeholders- Franchise owners, broadcasters and sponsors. Indian Premier League will be only be played when the conditions return to normality.

The 13th edition of Indian Premier League was scheduled to be played from 29th March. The opening game of the 2020 Indian Premier League was scheduled to be played between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Due to strict lockdown exercised throughout the country, there were early rumors that Indian Premier League will be played behind closed doors. It was originally planned to be played in empty stadiums and televised throughout the country. The start of the competition was deferred to 15th April due to growing Coronavirus cases.

The game of cricket has suffered a lot due to a lot of cricketing events being cancelled due to ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. India hosting South Africa for three-match one-day series was called off, while Australia hosting New Zealand was postponed after the trans-Tasman played only match in the one-day series.

World Cup Champions England have also delayed their cricket season till the last week of May. Several overseas signings have been cancelled. BCCI managed to call off the one-day series between India and South Africa as situation became serious in India.
