Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Nicholas Pooran as the new limited-overs captain for the national side. Earlier this month, All-rounder Kieron Pollard announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.
With Pollard calling it a day, Pooran has been named as one-day captain of West Indies. Last year, Nicholas Pooran was the interim captain for West Indies in the five-match T20I series played against Australia in the Caribbean. Cricket West Indies made a formal announcement that Shai Hope is recommended to be the vice-captain of the one-day team.
After being named as ODI captain, Nicholas Pooran expressed his pleasure of being given the honor to the lead the country. He said that the West Indies cricket has seen some great captains in the past, who have created an incredible legacy. This is an important role in West Indies Cricket, as the game does bring together people from all walks of life.
Nicholas Pooran has been a bankable performer for West Indies for past couple of years and deserves this recognition. Pooran said that being named captain of the one-day side is truly the highlight of his career. He further stated that he will be determined to help West Indies produce positive results and achieve great things in the future.
Nicholas Pooran’s first assignment will be West Indies’ tour of Netherlands which is expected to begin later this month. Cricket West Indies, Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams has shown full support to Nicholas Pooran after being named captain of the ODI team.
Former West Indies captain Jimmy Adams said that Nicholas Pooran is capable and ready to lead the ODI cricket team. Adams said that Pooran has delivered excellent performances for the side in the past and has earned full respect of his colleagues. The selection committee believes that Pooran showed excellent leadership skills during Pakistan tour. He has a lot of experience of playing in different T20 Leagues around in the world, which proved to be key factor in recommending him for T20 captaincy as well.
