Dawid Malan, Saqib Mahmood named in England squad for Headingley Test

Dawid Malan has been named in England squad for the third Test of the series against India. The game will be played from 25th August at Headingley Cricket Ground.  Opener Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley have been dropped from the Test squad after doing poorly in the first two matches.

Saqib Mahmood, who made his debut for England in white-ball cricket earlier this summer, has been named in the 15-member squad for the third Test. Jack Leach will join the Test squad. Mark Wood has included in the squad despite suffering from shoulder injury during Lords Test.

Dawid Malan return was imminent as England will be looking for experienced player in the batting lineup for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia. The left-hander has been a prolific run-scorer for England in the T20 format. He is currently no.1 ranked batsman in ICC T20 Rankings. Malan has made his red-ball appearance for England against India in 2018 Pataudi Trophy played in England.

He was dropped from the Test squad after not scoring runs in the opening Test at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham.

His Test record for England has been below-par with an average of 27.84 after 15 matches. In only first-class game this season, Dawid Malan smashed 199 runs for Yorkshire. Last year’s Bob Willis Trophy, he averaged close to 70. During his first tour to Australia, Malan showed decent form and scored a splendid century at The WACA in Perth.

The home side will go for pace options and not field two spinners at Headingley Cricket Ground. Left-arm spinner Jack Leach has been released from the Test squad and will play for Somerset in the next week’s first-class game.

Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley have not played enough first-class matches this season. The next set of fixtures in the English County Championship will begin from 27th August.
