Former South Africa opening batsman Gary Kirsten has been named as the new head coach of Durban Heat in the upcoming season of Mzansi Super League. Kirsten has credible coaching experience and has coached India to win their second World Cup crown at home.
He also coached South Africa and helped them reach top summit in Test cricket. Besides international teams, he has also performed the role of Head Coach in T20 Leagues like Big Bash League and Indian Premier League.
Gary Kirsten was rumored to be among the list of candidates to coach England cricket team after Trevor Bayliss’s term will end in September. But since he opted to coach Durban Heat, he has been effectively ruled out for becoming head coach of England cricket team.
In November, Gary Kirsten will officially take over the franchise in order to help them prepare for the competition. After the formal announcement, Kirsten stated that he has some great memories of playing cricket at Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban. It will be great opportunity to serve South Africa cricket when he was given the call to become the head coach of Durban Heat for the coming season.
Gary Kirsten said that he will be looking to increase and ignite more interest among general public about T20 cricket. The main agenda for him will be to win games of cricket and build a brand with a lot of public support. On a personal note, he will be looking to make sure Durban Heat can perform exceedingly well in this year’s tournament.
Kirsten also said that it will be another opportunity to bring value to the side and help Durban Heat reach their potential. He stated that every competition is different and it is important to start well in the coming Mzansi Super League.
