Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh included in Australia’s ODI and T20I squad for South Africa series

Australia have named their ODI and T20I squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. All-rounder Glenn Maxwell makes his return to both the squads due to excellent performances in the recently concluded Big Bash League. Last year, Maxwell decided to take a break from international cricket following mental health issues.

The 31-year old was the standout performer for Melbourne Stars in this year’s Big Bash League. He led the side well to their second successive final. He accumulated 389 runs with the bat and picked up crucial wickets with the ball. National Selector Trevor Hohns said that Glenn Maxwell richly deserves his return to the side after doing well in the Big Bash League.

All-rounder Ashton Turner has been dropped to make way for Glenn Maxwell. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh and wicket-keeper Matthew Wade have been named in the limited-overs squad, while D’Arcy Short and Peter Handscomb have been dropped. In the T20I squad, Mitchell Marsh, Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott have been included for the three-match series.

In the Big Bash League, Mitchell Marsh finished as leading run-scorer for Perth Scorchers. He accumulated 382 runs at a strike rate of 145, whereas Wade managed to do well and score consistently for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Pacer Jhye Richardson has not played for Australia since suffering from shoulder injury.

All-rounder Marcus Stoinis has been overlooked despite being named player of the tournament in the recently concluded Big Bash League. The side will begin their tour with T20I series on 21st February at The Wanderers in Johannesburg.
