India’s premier spinner Ravi Ashwin is all set to play Kings XI Punjab for the coming season of Indian Premier League after the announcement made by the franchise on Monday (26th February). Ashwin was bought for Rs 7.6 crore in the 2018 Indian Premier League auction and was the front-runner for the post of captaining the franchise despite having no experience of doing the job.
He is set to take over from Glenn Maxwell, who was signed by Delhi Daredevils for the coming season of IPL. The spinner said that he was keen to take up the challenge of captaining the franchise and make sure he can create a good environment for players to perform consistently in the competition.
Ravi Ashwin said that he has experience of leading his state Tamil Nadu in first-class cricket at the age of 21 years. He said that the captaincy will definitely push him to try different things on the field. He stated that it was an honor to lead the Kings XI Punjab franchise for the 2018 Indian Premier League and would be determined to make sure side does well in the competition.
The off-spinner has played over 100 games in Indian Premier League. He played for seven seasons for Chennai Super Kings before joining Rising Pune Supergiants last season. He could not take part in the competition after suffering from an injury. He played his first season in 2009 and became an integral part of Chennai Super League who went onto win consecutive title in 2010 and 2011. He has picked up 100 wickets in 111 games at an average of 25 with a superb economy rate of 6.55.
Kings XI Punjab has endured a torrid time in the Indian Premier League for past couple of years but Ashwin would be determined to make sure that side is all geared to produce better results in the coming season of IPL.
