Jason Holder, Kieroon Pollard and Nicholas Pooran opt out of Bangladesh tour

West Indies have announced their Test and ODI squad for the upcoming tour of Bangladesh. Experienced players like Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetymer, Roston Chase and Evin Lewis have decided to opt out of Bangladesh series due to Covid-19 pandemic.

With Jason Holder unavailable, opener Kraigg Brathwaite has been named as interim captain of the Test side, while Jason Mohammed will lead West Indies for the one-day series. Shamarh Brookes, Shai Hope, Shane Dowrich, Fabian Allen and Darren Bravo have also decided not to tour Bangladesh due to personal reasons.

Cricket West Indies clearly stated that due to covid-19 policy, any player can opt out of the upcoming tour. If a player fails he will not be able to play in so and so conditions, then will not be forced to go for overseas tour.

Uncapped All-rounder Kavem Hodge, who plays for Windward Island, has earned his maiden call-up to the Test squad. In first-class cricket, Kavem Hodge has accumulated 1,890 runs with the bat. He also a useful bowler and claimed 44 wickets so far.

Uncapped opener Shayne Moseley and all-rounder Kyle Mayers have also earned their maiden call-ups for the upcoming series against Bangladesh. Earlier this year, Kyle Mayers made his T20 debut for West Indies against New Zealand.

For ODI series, Akeal Hossain and Kjorn Ottley are newest additions to the squad for West Indies.

Roger Harper, CWI’s Lead Selector, said that Kavem Hodge has been a consistent performer in the domestic competition and certainly deserves his maiden call-up to the Test squad. Kyle Mayers put in impressive performances during this year’s Caribbean Premier League.

With so many experienced not travelling to Bangladesh; it has opened opportunities for youngsters to prove their mettle with bat and ball in the ODI and Test Series.

Left-hander Kjorn Ottley showed exceptional form for his team in the Super50 competition last year. He will be looking to make an impression with the bat for West Indies in the upcoming three-match one-day series. With Shakib Al Hasan back for the side, Bangladesh will tough to beat in their backyard. With new players included in the both ODI and Test squads, it will be interesting to see how West Indies fare against Bangladesh.

The visitors are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on 10th January. West Indies led by Jason Mohammed, will play three-match one-day series, starting from 20th January. The culmination of the one-day series will see West Indies take on Bangladesh in a two-match Test series, starting from 3rd February.
