Middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu announces retirement from international cricket

Middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu has announced his retirement from international cricket. Despite being a regular in the limited-overs squad, Rayudu was not selected in the India’s squad for ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Following the snub from the selectors, Rayudu decided to retire from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.

Rayudu also sent a notification to the BCCI before making this big announcement. BCCI Spokesperson said that Rayudu expressed his gratitude for the all support and encouragement given to him by team management, captain and BCCI. He did not cite any particular reason for his sudden retirement from the game of cricket.

Despite being kept as back-up player in case of injury, he was not called up as a replacement in the ongoing World Cup. The selectors decided to go with Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal as replacements for Shikhar Dhawan and Vijay Shankar.

Ambati Rayudu did not reveal his reasons for his immediate retirement from international cricket. He made his limited-overs debut for India in July 2013 against Zimbabwe. The 33-year old played 55 one-day matches and scored 1694 runs at an average of 47.05. He also scored three centuries and 10 half-centuries. Ambati Rayudu also has played six T20 matches for India and scored only 42 runs.

Rayudu was overlooked after not doing that well during India’s home series against New Zealand. He had done a decent job for the side at no.4 spot for the past one year.

Chairman of selectors MSK Prasad stated that Vijay Shankar was picked ahead of Rayudu due to all-round ability with bat and ball. In his first-class career, he scored 6151 runs in 97 matches at an average of 45.56 with 16 centuries to his name.

Ambati Rayudu saw his cricketing career come to a halt when he participated in the infamous Indian Cricket League in 2007. He was played for top sides like Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League.
