Indian pace bowler Umesh Yadav has been named in the ODI squad for the first two games against West Indies. Yadav has come in place of injured Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of the one-day series. He has not played too many one-day games for India but a superb performance in the two-match Test series led to this selection.
Shardul Thakur suffered from a tendon injury during the second Test match against West Indies played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. It was a tragic end to his Test debut as he was sidelined for the rest of the game after sending ten legal deliveries in the game. He was part of India’ ODI squad for South Africa series played earlier this year. He also picked four wickets in the game played against South Africa at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
Umesh Yadav last played a one-day game for India against England in July. The visitors lost that the game by 86 runs. Pace bowlers like Khaleel Ahmed, Siddharth Kaul, and Siddharth Kaul have gained prominence over the past one year in limited-overs cricket. BCCI have named ODI squad for the first two games of the series against West Indies. The series opener will be played on Sunday at Guwahati.
Left-arm spinner Ravendra Jadeja has retained his place in the squad after producing credible performances for India during the Asia Cup 2018. Jadeja does provide value with the bat as India is currently missing Hardik Pandya, who has been sidelined due to injury. Rishabh Pant and Manish Pandey have been included as India will need to cure their middle-order woes in order to tick all the boxes ahead of the next year’s Cricket World Cup.
India’s ODI Squad (first two games): Virat Kohli (captain), Rohit Sharma , Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, MS Dhoni (wk), Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu, Manish Pandey, Ravendra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Khaleel Ahmed, Umesh Yadav.
