The selectors have also announced the limited-overs squad for Australia series that is slated to begin from 14th January.
Vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who has enjoyed a purple patch in all three formats in 2019, has been rested for three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Surprisingly, wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni was once again overlooked for the T20 format.
Pace bowler Jaspreet Bumrah suffered from a lower-back stress fracture after the conclusion of India’s tour to West Indies in August last year. Bumrah delivered excellent performances in the two-match series played in the Caribbean. He finished with 13 wickets to his name. After going a detailed rehabilitation process, Bumrah has fully recovered from injury and even bowled a lot of overs during India’s one-day series against West Indies.
On the other hand, opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan suffered from knee injury while participating in the domestic T20 competition. Left-hander also missed crucial stages of 2019 Cricket World Cup after being ruled out of the competition due to a thumb injury. He has been included for the T20I series against Sri Lanka and also for one-day series against Australia.
Shikhar Dhawan will take Rohit Sharma’s place in the T20 squad. He is expected to open the innings with Lokesh Rahul in the T20I series against Sri Lanka. Due to a groin injury suffered during the one-day series against West Indies, pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is missing from both the squads.
Pace Deepak Chahar has suffered a lower back stress fracture and is expected to return to competitive cricket in April next year. Kedhar Jadhav has retained his place in the limited-overs squad for series against Australia that will be played at home in January
