Somerset have signed Pakistan’s premier batsman Babar Azam for the upcoming T20 Blast competition that will begin from 18th July. With this move, Azam will extend his stay in England beyond the World Cup and will be available 14 round-robin matches and quarterfinals. The tournament might extend till the month of September.
Azam is now the second player after Azhar Ali who is going to play for Somerset in the upcoming Vitality T20 Blast. Azhar Ali had enjoyed a great run for Somerset in the English County Championship and also was instrumental in helping Somerset clinch Royal London One-Day competition.
Babar Azam expressed his gratitude over joining Somerset for the coming T20 Blast competition. He said that he will be focused to do well for the side in the T20 competition. He said that the Somerset will provide him all the support and encouragement to showcase his batting skills in the tournament.
He has certainly produced incredible numbers in the T20 format with 3430 runs in 106 T20 matches with a strike rate of 120.26. For Pakistan, Azam has scored 1182 runs in 29 matches at an average of 53.72.
Somerset CCC Director of Operations Andy Hurry said that the side is delighted to have signed for Babar Azam for this year’s Vitality T20 Blast competition. He also stated that Azam will certainly bolster the batting resources for the competition and is one of premier batsman in the 20-over format. Hurry said that they want to sign to a player who can consistently score runs with the bat for the side in the competition.
