Sri Lanka have named their 31-man preliminary squad for the upcoming Asia Cup that will be played in UAE next month. The Islanders would be keen to get their combinations right given that is a 50-over competition comprising of major teams like Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
The good news for Sri Lanka is Dinesh Chandimal, who missed the Test and ODI series against South Africa makes his return to the side. The middle-order batsman was handed out a ban by Sri Lankan Cricket Board during the home series against South Africa. He produced a match-winning effort with the bat to his side beat South Africa in the one-off T20 game.
The Asia Cup 2018 will consist of six teams divided into two groups. Group A contains Pakistan, India and one side from Asia Cup qualifiers tournament. Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka are placed in Group B.
Sri Lanka came back strongly in the last two games of the one-day series against South Africa and also won the one-off T20 game to conclude the tour. The Islanders are the reigning champions, having lifted the trophy against Pakistan in the competition held in Bangladesh in 2014. Afghanistan will make their debut in the competition and might spring surprise due to consistently good performances in recent months.
Uncapped players like Nishan Peiris, Shammu Asahn, Jehan Daniel, Shehan Madushanka and Kamindu Mendis are also included in the preliminary squad for Asia Cup 2018.
