Sri Lanka’s premier all-rounder Angelo Matthews has been ruled out of the Bangladesh Tri-series. Sri Lankan Captain has suffered a hamstring injury and will be out of the game for at least three weeks. Dinesh Chandimal will take over the captaincy duties for the remainder of the games in the competition.
Chandimal has experience of leading the side in the longer format of the game and will make sure Sri Lanka is able to produce their best cricket in the tri-series featuring hosts Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Matthews will be keen to get fit in time for the first Test match against Bangladesh that will be played on 31st January.
Mathews has been through a rough period in the last two years as he not been a regular name in the Sri Lankan lineup across all three formats. He has missed a lot of cricket during this time due to hamstring problems and also decided to quit the captaincy of the national side. The all-rounder will need to put an extra yard on his fitness as Sri Lanka wants to him in all three formats.
Sri Lankan Cricket Board official also made a formal announcement on Angelo Matthews’s injury and said that all-rounder has been sent back to Sri Lanka in order to go through the process of rehabilitation. The all-rounder also might skip the first game of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh that will begin at the end of January. It looks highly unlikely that Matthews will get fit for the opening Test against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka has named Sadheera Samarawickrama as a probable replacement for Angelo Matthews for the Bangladesh Tri-series. However, team management is sending Samarawickrama as a replacement while there are plenty of the players in the squad that can do a good job in absence of Matthews.
