Sri Lanka’s premier batsman Dinesh Chandimal has been ruled out of the upcoming Asia Cup 2018 due to a finger injury. The right-handed batsman sustained the injury during Sri Lanka T20 League game played last week.
After a thorough medical examination, it was revealed Chandimal will not take part in the upcoming tournament. Wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella has been named Chandimal’s replacement in the squad for the Asia Cup 2018. Chandimal was originally included in the squad but could not make the cut owing to a serious injury.
Dickwella was dropped from the one-day side following his poor performances over the last six months. He failed to produce good scores during the five-match series played against South Africa at home.
Chandimal sat on the sidelines during the one-day series against Sri Lanka played at home after being handed out a six-match ban due to ball tampering penalty. He did play the one-off game for Sri Lanka against South Africa. His untimely injury is a big set for Sri Lanka, who are currently going through their worst phase in limited-overs cricket.
Another player ruled out of the competition for Sri Lanka is opener Danushka Gunathilaka, who suffered from a back injury. Shehan Jayasuriya has been named as a replacement for Gunathilaka.
He was also handed a six-match ban after violating Sri Lanka Cricket Board’s Players code of conduct. He was found guilty of not obeying team management and was subsequently handed a strict penalty.
Premier off-spinner Akila Dhananjaya will also miss the early part of the competition and has returned to Sri Lanka citing personal reasons. He set to be with his wife for the birth of his first child. The Islanders will start off their campaign against Bangladesh on 15th September.
Sri Lanka’s ODI Captain Angelo Matthews will be hoping that senior players like Upul Tharanga, Kusal Perera, and Lasith Malinga can find form in the upcoming Asia Cup that will begin from 15th September.
