Pacer Umesh Yadav has been ruled out of the remainder of the Border Gavaskar Trophy after suffering from a calf injury during the Boxing Day Test played at Melbourne. Selectors have named uncapped pacer T Natarajan as a replacement for Umesh Yadav.
On the third day of the Boxing Day Test, Umesh Yadav was ruled out of the series after he suffered from a strain in his left calf muscle. T Natarajan was kept in the Test squad as reserve player even when the T20I series were concluded against Australia.
He has been used as net bowler by Indian batsmen for practice sessions. Pacer made quite an impression in this year’s Indian Premier League and delivered splendid performances for Sunrisers Hyderabad. In IPL, left-arm quick bowled consistently well and claimed 18 wickets in 16 outings at an average of 31.50.
The 29-year old has put in decent numbers for Tamil Nadu in first-class competition. In 20 Test matches, T Natarajan has claimed 64 wickets at an average of 27.03 with three five-wicket hauls to his name.
India’s bowling resources will be tested after Mohammad Shami and Umesh Yadav have been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Australia. Besides Shami and Yadav, Ishant Sharma has also not picked for Australia tour due to injury suffered during the Indian Premier League.
Mohammad Siraj made quite an impression in his debut game for India at Melbourne Cricket Ground. Shardul Thakur and Navdeep Saini are other prominent pace options for India for the remaining two matches of the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
With so many key players missing or injured, it will be interesting to see how India fare against Australia in the remaining two matches of the Test series.
With series evenly poised at 1-1 in the four-match series, Australia will have to address a lot of issues going into third Test that will be played in Sydney from 7th January.
